On Earth Day, we’re reminded to take care of what we’re given and be mindful of the materials, history, and future of the world around us. At a recent renovation in Salem, we’re doing just that.
New mechanical shafts were carved into the building, giving the team old growth wood to incorporate back into the design. The fabrication team tested these beams and their possibilities through routing, sanding, and finishing, exposing different colors, textures, and patterns.
By reframing the wood beams as a resource and not waste, we’re able to reduce embodied carbon and associated emissions and deeply interact with the potentials of this amazing natural material.
