The Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University (TCSVM) in Grafton, Massachusetts educates veterinarians for careers in veterinary practice, agriculture, government, science and industry. As New England’s only veterinary school, TCSVM provides unique services to the New England region. Its veterinarians are broadly trained biomedical scientists who study the relationship between animal health, human health and the environment. They are best known for their work in global public health, infectious and pulmonary diseases, oncology, musculoskeletal research, reproductive biology and liver physiology.
The most critical and immediate challenge of the Cummings School is to redesign, renovate and right–size its 1980s vintage small and large animal teaching hospitals – the Foster Hospital for Small Animals (FHSA) and its Hospital for Large Animals (HLA) – to deliver 21st century clinical care and state-of-the-art quality clinical learning. Renovation and expansion are necessary for TCSVM to remain competitive with the newer regional specialty hospitals that compete with the school for veterinary case referrals, client business and faculty doctors.
PAYETTE envisioned a comprehensive master plan for TCSVM that plan respects the status of the campus as a Massachusetts Register historic site; the proposed layouts and compact designs maintain the site’s pastoral context. The master plan also addresses the need for sustainable building infrastructure, and considers the site constraints, parking and circulation impacts of the proposed facilities. This hospital master plan intends to establish – on the conceptual level – the size, nature and general layout of future clinical and academic department space needed to support the patient caseload and clinical teaching model in small animal and equine medicine/surgery for the next 30 years.
TCSVM recently unveiled their vision to bring the master plan to reality, which will improve quality and size of the hospital complex, which is essential to attracting the best students and faculty. Learn more about TCSVM’s plan for the future.
