Working with researchers and analyzing research facilities around North America and Europe, Payette programmed and designed the laboratory fit-out of the new Skolkovo Institute of Science and Technology, for which we had developed a Master Plan. The Institute, designed by Herzog & de Meuron, is poised to become a groundbreaking center for academic research in Russia. It will link biomedical, materials, computational, energy and space research to industry, creating a preeminent entrepreneurial research institution.

Advances in Fit-Out Design
The building’s seven-meter column spacing affords the opportunity for plan customization. Working within this structural layout, we designed plan typologies that share a common kit of parts to meet the diverse research needs of ten Centers for Research, Education and Innovation (CREIs). High bay open labs with support, dry labs, computational spaces and offices are organized in layers to facilitate interchange and collaboration.
When Hallways Become Streets
Generous passageways – “north-south roads” – foster interaction among the CREIs, while highlighting their individual identities. Core shared facilities are located largely below ground and include optical and advanced imaging, glassblowing and machine shops, glass wash and media prep, a cleanroom and a vivarium. This centralization of technology links the CREIs’ diverse research endeavors and allows for greater flexibility in laboratory design and use.
