Last night the Alabama AIA chapter celebrated its annual award ceremony. PAYETTE is pleased to announce that the University of Alabama at Birmingham Comprehensive Cancer Center received a design award with high honors designation. The project received one of only two high honors awards in the program. The project was completed in association with Williams Blackstock Architects in Birmingham.
In 2009, Dr. Ed Patridge, Director of the Comprehensive Cancer Center of the University of Alabama at Birmingham, launched the renovation of the Wallace Tumor Institute with a challenge to include a new front door, lots of light and design that fosters collaboration between scientists.
Finally open in 2013, the project consolidates researchers and clinicians from over 19 buildings into a rejuvenated home that far exceeds the initial goals. In these new light-filled spaces, it’s hard to recall the tense political era that was the genesis for the aging bunker-like block that turned its back on the street, isolating its occupants.
The awards program makes the public aware of the broadest possible range of architects’ skills and services and encourages the demonstration of exceptional professional skills within the entire scope of the design continuum.
