Payette is pleased to announce the 2022-2023 recipient of the Payette Sho-Ping Chin Memorial Academic Scholarship, Cornell University student Jada Canon.
Jada has acted as a historian for the University of Colorado Denver National Organization of Minority Architecture Students and as a volunteer for Architexx, a feminist architecture collective. Now pursuing a Master’s in Architecture at Cornell University, Jada also serves on the Diversity and Inclusion Council. They plan to utilize their background to become an architect who considers an array of different, often underrepresented, perspectives, and represents communal values in an accessible form.
This award honors late architect Sho-Ping Chin, FAIA, a long-time principal at Payette and a healthcare practice leader who was instrumental in defining and elevating the national discourse for women in design. As part of the prize, Jada will receive a $10,000 scholarship and will be mentored by an architect at Payette for the scholarship year.
The application period for the 2023-2024 Payette Sho-Ping Chin Memorial Academic Scholarship is now open!
This $10,000 grant is intended to support women pursuing a professional degree in architecture recognized by the National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB). In addition, to help the scholarship recipient establish contacts within the profession, they will be assigned a senior mentor from Payette for the scholarship year. Qualified students entering at least their third year of undergraduate, or any level of graduate study, are encouraged to apply. More details can be found on the Architects Foundation’s site. Applications close next year, on Friday, January 20, 2023.

The team worked hard to appreciate the memory of fellow co-worker and friend, Sho-Ping Chin. The exhibit importantly highlights the incredible women from around the country who have received either the Scholarship or Grant in her name, learning more about how these funds impacted their careers and the industry. The exhibit portrays a ripple effect beginning with the work of Sho-Ping, and how her leadership influenced beyond her personal work. Sho-Ping is part of a growing community and movement for generations to come, and Payette is honored to be a part of her story and all those who come behind her.
“A group of us came together because we felt like this was the chance to plan an exhibit to honor Sho-Ping and show the impact that her leadership has had on the profession. Her legacy is most evident in the recipients of the Payette Sho-Ping Chin Memorial Academic Scholarship and the Sho-Ping Chin WLS Grant”.
