We are pleased to announce the Biosciences Research Building at the National University of Ireland, Galway has been named as a recipient of the 2016 AIA COTE Tope Ten Awards.
Each year, the American Institute of Architects (AIA) and its Committee on the Environment (COTE) select the top ten examples of sustainable architecture and ecological design projects that protect and enhance the environment. In its 20th year, the program celebrates projects that are the result of a thoroughly integrated approach to architecture, natural systems and technology.
The Biosciences Research Building is one of the most energy efficient research laboratories in the world and is home to cutting-edge research space dedicated to cancer research, regenerative medicine, chemical biology and BSL3 animal research. The building is very densely occupied – 89% of the total square footage is used for research space.
The design of the Biosciences Research Building embraces the moderate climate of Ireland. By locating low-load spaces along the perimeter of the building, the project takes advantage of natural ventilation as the sole conditioning strategy for the majority of the year, and is supplemented less than 10% of the year with radiant heating. Due to this approach, 45% of this intensive research building is able to function without mechanical ventilation. This simple, yet radical approach, is rarely implemented in similar labs in comparable U.S. climates.

Located along Boston’s famed Emerald Necklace designed by Frederick Law Olmsted, the Klarman Building responds to the presence of this green space to create a state-of-the-art center for inpatient care and healing. In addition to extending aspects of nature into the building through orienting views and finishes, the Sky Garden allows patients, family and staff to find healing in the landscape.
