Session: ‘Soft Growth:’ Space efficiency and expanded research capacity without new construction

For institutions wanting to aggressively expand the number of researchers, faculty, and students without the need for new facility construction, realigning the science master space plan should be Step One. Leon Drachman and Dean Appling examine how one of the largest colleges of science in the US has retooled its master plan to guide faculty and student growth, increase program innovation, and realign facilities with the institution’s mission — all without the addition of a single square foot of new construction. They illustrate critical processes for discovering, communicating, and prioritizing high-value space use opportunities.
