In just 4 weeks the SCUP-47 will be upon us.
This July at SCUP’s 47th Annual, International Conference & Idea Marketplace, PAYETTE’s Christopher Baylow will speak at the session titled Putting Pedagogy, Planning, and Architecture to the Test Through Post-Occupancy Evaluation. This workshop will uncover the successful (and sometimes unsuccessful) aspects of the recently completed LEED Gold Wheaton College Science Center through the lens of a post-occupancy evaluation. Joining Baylow in this discussion will be Joseph Chronister, Director of FGM’s Higher Education practice and Dorothy F. Chappell, Dean of Natural and Social Sciences and Professor of Biology at Wheaton College.
The presenters will use this case study to critique how pedagogy and planning translates into an interdisciplinary research and teaching facility; the impact the building has on enrollment and recruitment of faculty; lessons learned and how the science center will inform future campus planning efforts and future teaching and research facilities.
A brief overview of the project:
Completed in 2010, the Wheaton College Science Center created a new home for the sciences on its liberal arts campus of 2000 students. Interdisciplinary teaching and research is at the core of the science programs at Wheaton. Eleven different departments are organized into two wings on four floors. Programs range from dry science functions such as math and computer science to fume hood intensive programs like chemistry. Spaces range in complexity from general purpose classrooms shared among the scientific disciplines to highly specialized core facilities such as an NMR imaging suite and vivarium.
Join the panel for a lively presentation and discussion on Putting Pedagogy, Planning, and Architecture to the Test Through Post-Occupancy Evaluation this July.
