Attending the SCUP 2014 North Atlantic Regional Conference next week? We’ll be presenting two different topics:
Renaissance of Engineering: Planning for the 21st Century
Capstone Experiences – Supporting Student Scholarship
Renaissance of Engineering: Planning for the 21st Century
with Jim Collins (PAYETTE), Clifford Resnick (Brown University) and James May (MIT)
The demand for engineering expertise is rapidly increasing. What does this mean for engineering schools? Through a series of recent planning studies for Brown, Columbia, Cornell, Polytechnic Institute of New York University, MIT and Skoltech/Skolkovo Institute of Science and Technology, a number of trends have emerged. Presenters engage the audience in a test of their knowledge. Institutional representatives from MIT and Brown share the challenges/opportunities they encountered in repurposing and re-programming these high cost, equipment rich and increasingly wet spaces.

Capstone Experiences – Supporting Student Scholarship
with Jessie Couture (Keene State College), Jay V. Kahn (Keene State College), Heather Taylor (PAYETTE), Roger Wilkie (Keene State College)
Many institutions require students to complete Capstone Projects as a graduation prerequisite. What space is provided or needed for these experiences? Student in the sciences expect bench space in student-faculty research labs. Students in the performing arts usually complete original compositions performed in recital halls or theaters. Practicums are the capstone experience for future educators and health providers. Less clear are the resources needed to support students graduating in media arts, humanities, management and social sciences who usual work in groups. Panelists, including students, explore and share findings. Detailed research is based on Keene State’s Campus, where Capstone Experiences are offered in most majors. Research will be supplemented from a sampling of North Atlantic Region.
