Situated along Boston’s Commonwealth Avenue, the Center for Integrated Life Sciences & Engineering (CILSE) promises to bring a state-of-the-art research facility to the front door of Boston University’s campus. The 170,000-square-foot nine-story building will serve faculty from schools and departments throughout BU’s expansive neuroscience community, along with other universities in the Boston area.
When complete, the CILSE will be one of the first projects in the U.S. to employ large-format, glass-fiber reinforced concrete (GFRC) fins and panels. The presentation will focus on how we successfully incorporated the product, manufactured by Rieder Smart Elements GmbH under the FibreC product line, into the design of the building.

Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center recently completed a new inpatient building in the heart of Boston’s Longwood Medical Area. A rich texture and palette of materials adorn the wall along the base of the building. Polished black granite forms the watercourse and seat walls, warm gray granite is used on the large wall panels, and an alternating texture of black granite, green glazed terracotta, and weathered steel is applied to the vertical recesses between the granite wall panels.
This design accentuates key elements in the landscape and introduces an intimate human scale and craftsmanship to the pedestrian realm.
