Since his arrival in 1985, Barry has led the design teams of several of Payette’s major research projects for universities including the Frick Chemistry Laboratory at Princeton University, which won the Hobson Honor Award for Design Excellence from the Boston Society of Architects. He has over 25 years of experience at Payette and brings terrific project management skills and relevant science and technology experiences to each of his projects. Barry has a proved track record managing the design process for complex science projects with challenging programmatic and MEP systems requirements. Additionally, his style works towards building consensus and fostering truly collaborative environments.
Recently, PAYETTE was selected as 1 of 5 finalists for A Bauhaus Bathroom at the Gropius House, from 280+ submissions across 40+ countries.
Our proposal places a new public restroom beside the historic garage, treating it not as an object, but as part of the arrival sequence to the site. A straight wall organizes movement from the visitor center; a curved, translucent volume gathers entry, waiting, and turning before releasing visitors toward the house.
Inside, dark durable surfaces meet a luminous upper zone, drawing from Gropius’s own use of contrast, color, and diffuse light.
