Wes joined Payette in 2005. He received his B.Arch. magna cum laude from the Syracuse University School of Architecture in 2004. During his years at Payette, Wesley has spent a lot of time working on the social spaces within our building typology, like the atriums. He finds the challenge of the open ended space with a great deal of freedom fascinating. Over the past seven years, Wes has taught and refined courses at the Boston Architectural College, primarily in the foundation department. In 2011 Wesley participated on the winning team of the Common Boston Design Build Challenge. Their entry, “New Perspective,” created a destination to heighten the experience of the wild and focus one’s attention on nature, sited in a small clearing off a public path. One of Payette’s avid cyclists, Wes commutes to work on his bike and takes longer rides when he can find the time.
Recently, PAYETTE was selected as 1 of 5 finalists for A Bauhaus Bathroom at the Gropius House, from 280+ submissions across 40+ countries.
Our proposal places a new public restroom beside the historic garage, treating it not as an object, but as part of the arrival sequence to the site. A straight wall organizes movement from the visitor center; a curved, translucent volume gathers entry, waiting, and turning before releasing visitors toward the house.
Inside, dark durable surfaces meet a luminous upper zone, drawing from Gropius’s own use of contrast, color, and diffuse light.
