Bob joined Payette in 1981 after receiving B.Arch. and Bachelor of Fine Arts degrees from RISD. He was named partner in 1995. Bob focuses on science research and teaching buildings for colleges and universities, and he brings a special focus to the opportunities for campus transformation inherent in the design of these projects. Bob gained national attention from his article, “Recovering from Sputnik,” published in the SCUP journal Planning for Higher Education in 1998.
Recently, PAYETTE was selected as 1 of 5 finalists for A Bauhaus Bathroom at the Gropius House, from 280+ submissions across 40+ countries.
Our proposal places a new public restroom beside the historic garage, treating it not as an object, but as part of the arrival sequence to the site. A straight wall organizes movement from the visitor center; a curved, translucent volume gathers entry, waiting, and turning before releasing visitors toward the house.
Inside, dark durable surfaces meet a luminous upper zone, drawing from Gropius’s own use of contrast, color, and diffuse light.
