After a comprehensive Research Master Plan, PAYETTE completed a full fit-out of the Edmund D. Bossone Research Enterprise Center. Primarily a classroom building before the renovation, we reconfigured the space into high technology wet research laboratories.
Our approach was to renovate the labs utilizing a prefabricated service grid system, procured by multiple vendors, which allowed the majority of the components to be manufactured off site. Therefore the vast majority of the laboratory components arrived premade and the renovation was executed in a relatively short period of time with minimal disruption to the building’s ongoing occupation.

Labs on the 3rd, 5th and 6th floors were converted to wet research laboratory space, under a tight deadline. It was critical that the fit-out of these labs was done quickly in order to provide immediate relief for the research lab shortage in the Chemistry and Engineering Departments.
The building is divided approximately into thirds, following the existing column grid. Two additional atria drive light through the building at varying depths.
The main circulation path connects these atria/hives, and is supplemented by secondary circulation paths that connect to the research labs. The existing structure is preserved as much as possible; setbacks on the north and south sides of the building follow the rhythm of the atria, allowing for direct visual access to the outside.
