2026 MLK Day of Service: Brighton Main Streets

Brighton Main Streets (BMS) strengthens the neighborhood’s commercial district through place-making, business support and public space activation. As part of the citywide Main Streets network and fiscally sponsored by Boston Main Streets Foundation, the organization bridges business interests with civic planning. BMS is a frequent supporter of Boston’s Age Strong Commission and the Veronica B. Smith Senior Center.

Project Brief:

Brighton Main Streets was looking for design services to reimagine and redesign the outdoor space shared by the Veronica B. Smith Senior Center and the adjacent Brighton Common. This project will transform an underutilized paved area into a welcoming, accessible and flexible community asset featuring ample seating with tables, a small stage for performances and programming, a modest garden and low-level landscaping. This redesigned space will serve as a vibrant extension of the Senior Center and an activated gateway to the heavily used Brighton Common.

The project responds to a growing need in the community: Brighton’s senior population continues to increase and depends on accessible outdoor environments to support social connection, physical activity and emotional wellbeing. Presently, the Senior Center’s outdoor area lacks adequate seating, accessibility features and programming space. At the same time, Brighton Common hosts frequent performances, family activities and daily recreational use, underscoring the need for a more unified, age-friendly environment that meets a broad range of community needs.

By creating an inclusive, intergenerational outdoor space, the project advances Brighton Main Streets’ mission to strengthen the economic vitality and cultural vibrancy of the neighborhood. The redesigned area will enhance the public realm, support local programming and expand opportunities for people of all ages to gather, connect and participate in community life.
