Following the outcome of a Master Plan, Wing Memorial Hospital decided to construct an addition to house several major clinical programs relocated from the aging 1940s main facility hospital. This first step is conceived as the cornerstone for the eventual outward migration of the remaining key clinical programs from the existing hospital to a new facility.
Due to a significant grade change between the hospital and the access road, it was necessary to create the new entry level 14 feet below the first floor of the existing hospital. Maintaining a clear connection to the hospital’s existing central circulation corridor was a key design driver. In addition, a secondary entrance was created on the first floor level adjacent to a larger parking area that is on grade with the existing hospital’s first floor.
The first floor includes the surgical suite comprised of three operating rooms, ancillary support, two endoscopy/minor procedure rooms and a 16-bay perioperative unit. On the second floor the potential monotony of providing for 46 inpatients beds on one floor is broken up by shifts and bends in the building’s geometry while creating smaller and more intimate groupings of patient rooms. Natural light and exterior views were key design factors in the arrangement of the inpatient rooms. Natural light and exterior views were key design factors in the arrangement of the inpatient rooms.
