CBLS represents the first phase of the North District at URI, a new science and technology hub, which transforms a series of irregular campus spaces into two well defined campus quadrangles bordered by a new pedestrian promenade. The highly cost-effective, LEED Gold building accommodates 30 faculty members and their research groups in addition to teaching labs, classrooms, a 300-seat auditorium, a genomics lab and a GSL-3 lab for life sciences education. A carefully integrated rain garden provides a living example of natural processes for students to observe; a roof garden provides respite for upper level offices and labs. Indigenous plantings populate both.

The sculptural quality of the main circulation stair climbs the full height of the atrium, with its instrument-like quality and unique structural detailing becoming a dramatic event within the space. Special attention was given to the scale, detail and joinery of elements within the building to emphasize the craft. Over 10% of materials were extracted, processed and manufactured locally. A unique, hand-made recycled aluminum tile offers a delicate accent to the floor pattern while the warmth of natural wood millwork complements the palette used throughout the building.
