Session Title: Space mock-up and prototyping processes that yield big efficiency and productivity results

Newly refined processes for prototyping space and fit-ups are yielding new findings on efficiency, productivity, and capital costs for medical research and clinical care. Session leaders illustrate new mock-up and prototyping processes along with specific findings from recent initiatives at Boston Children’s Hospital, Penn State Hershey Medical Center, Veterans Administration facilities, and others that detail patient rooms, lab benches, tissue culture rooms, research lighting, user interaction feature, and exterior modular assemblies. To better deliver actionable design and configuration inputs, the session explores planning factors for budgeting and scheduling along with effective techniques for timely user engagement.

The design and construction processes face growing market pressure to decrease time and increase efficiency. However, owners and architects remain unwilling to sacrifice construction quality in this pursuit. With growing frequency, full scale pre-construction mock-ups for critical interior and exterior design components are becoming standard practice. Full-scale mock-ups provide a valuable tool for owners, users, architects and contractors to convey design intent and construction quality.
