Company History

Payette started as Markus & Nocka in 1932. Tom Payette joined the firm in 1960 and was named President in 1965, after which the firm became Markus, Nocka, and Payette and was renamed Payette Associates in 1974. We specialize in designing highly technical buildings for healthcare and scientific research.

The quality of our work speaks for itself, and we enjoy an impressive list of clients and awards.

Tom Payette learned everything about hospitals from Paul Nocka. He synthesized this detailed knowledge with a late-Modern design ethos inherited from Josep Lluís Sert at the GSD, resulting in a series of New England hospitals noted for their bold expression of function, use of natural light and color, and intimate connection with the landscape. This early work established values that form the cornerstone of our work today.

We are now ten years into the third generation of the firm’s leadership with ten partners, most of whom grew up in the firm, leading us into the next 25 years with Jim Collins at the helm as President. While this partnership remains committed to the core values of our practice, the productive synergies that have developed through many years of practicing together will undoubtedly take us in new and exciting directions.
