Leonard Morse Hospital - Natick, MA

Payette was retained for a master planning and a major renovation and expansion of the existing hospital in 1965. As a regional hospital outside of a major metropolitan area, Leonard Morse was to have a three-fold role in the new plan: it would provide patient services ranging from intensive care units to extensive rehabilitation and extended care facilities and outpatient services; and it would serve as a local center in order to deal with an almost infinite number of possible growth patterns. Three methods of growth were designed. Open ended units grow linearly away from their connection to the circulation spines. Closed ended units grow by duplications either horizontally or vertically. Some spaces have been left unfinished within the new structure in anticipation of the future needs of contiguous services.
