Transkaryotic Therapies- Cambridge, MA 700 Main Street
The first major construction project of Transkaryotic Therapies (a small biopharmaceutical company) represents the company’s expansion and unification of research spaces in a new headquarters. The existing complex for the new project was a series of masonry buildings approximately 800 feet long. The total size of the project, both new and renovated space, is 180,000 square feet. The design concept was to create a “Main Street,” centralizing circulation along a common spine and connecting the extended complex of buildings. The lab entries are organized around the structural braces to provide a street address for each lab module or department along the long, linear footprint. Shared lounges and conference centers were located at the ends and midpoints of Main Street to provide smaller community groups within the larger headquarters.
