Gordon College - Wenham, MA Barrington Center for the Arts
This former gymnasium was renovated to house the theatre, communication and visual arts programs for Gordon College. A new 10,000 square-foot second floor was "inserted" into the existing gym to connect the primary programmatic pieces: a sloped film/seminar room for 85 students, two art galleries, and a studio theatre with moveable seating for 135 people. Sculpture, printmaking, and wood shops are organized along the perimeter for direct access to natural light. Sculpture includes an outdoor terraced work area to the north. An open staircase invites faculty and students upstairs to three sky-lit, north-facing painting/drawing studios and associated faculty offices. The second floor also houses the control room for the studio theatre and a shared computer classroom for graphics, journalism, and film studies.
