Biogen Idec - Cambridge, MA Building 8: Biological Research Facility
The five-story, 270,000-square-foot Bio 8 building occupies a complicated site where two city street grids merge. This process development and research building includes laboratories, offices, a café, and flexible meeting spaces. The angular massing of the building responds to this urban condition. Moreover, the L-shaped building encloses a courtyard that provides exterior function space. The plan revolves about a central core with corridors radiating from this hub and terminating in open resource libraries. All laboratories and offices have natural light. The first floor houses the major public spaces including a cafe, conference rooms, and a flexible multi-purpose space that can seat up to 400 people. Many of the building services are centralized here, including mechanical space and a loading dock.
