Biogen Idec - Cambridge, MA Building 6: Corporate Research Facility
Located in Cambridge’s Kendall Square, the goal of Biogen’s new facility was to respond to future growth and expansion while at the same time creating an image consistent throughout the complex. The tight site, bisected by an existing parking garage, was analyzed to determine the most efficient land use. The site was developed in a two-phase plan that uses L-shaped courtyard buildings as the primary building block for the campus. These three buildings encompass approximately 650,000 square feet. The facility includes two floors of biology research laboratories, one floor of chemistry research labs, and two floors of offices (which could be connected into labs at a later date). The overall massing and architectural articulation of the building are derived directly from its internal organization.
