Princeton University - Princeton, NJ Lewis Thomas Laboratory
One of the goals of this facility was to consolidate various branches of the biological sciences throughout campus. The result was the first open academic laboratory, complete with exposed building systems. The exterior’s brick with stone trim (the result of a collaborative design with Venturi, Scott Brown & Associates) relates to the palette of materials typical in this part of campus. All laboratory space is located at the building’s periphery, with generous natural light. Windows between labs and internal support spaces deliver light and views, promoting one’s awareness of fellow researchers. Four-person research modules with adjacent mechanical shafts easily accommodate additional services and partitions as needed. Solid oak wainscoting, doors, door frames, furniture, and laboratory casework are durable and add warmth.
