Middlebury College - Middlebury, VT McCardell Bicentennial Hall
Middlebury wanted all of its science disciplines housed in one new building – a campus focal point. Four stone wings radiate from a five-story interior “Great Hall” at the heart of the building for study, meeting, and informal learning. With dramatic exterior views to the north and west, the Great Hall brings the surrounding countryside inside. The connection between the building and the site is reinforced through the use of slate flooring, warm red oak wall panels, and abundant natural light. The exterior is clad with both dressed and rough-cut Adair and Indiana limestone, interspersed with expanses of glass curtainwall, reflecting the traditional New England vernacular. The new facility is the largest academic structure in the country to contain “green-certified” timber, harvested and processed through ecologically sensitive means.
