Bldg. NW 15 Francis Bitter Magnet Lab

MIT joined with Harvard University to establish the MIT/Harvard Center for Magnetic Resonance (CMR). The CMR develops new technologies for magnetic resonance spectroscopy and operates an instrument facility where the latest developments are applied to research in biochemistry and medicine. The design utilized the large volume of the existing building to shelter a highly tempered enclosure, creating a room within a room for the new 900 MHz magnet and spectrometer. A two stage isolation system which incorporates a 44 ton concrete inertia block suspended on air isolators was used to bring the site vibrations within the magnet manufacturer's acceptable limits. The plans of the new magnet facility were designed to easily accommodate an additional high field magnet in the future.
