College of Wooster - Wooster, OH Severance Chemistry Addition
The College of Wooster’s Severance Hall (built in 1902) has been reborn to house new teaching laboratories, independent study research laboratories, lecture areas, and faculty offices. The addition creates a major new entrance opposite the science library and student pathway with a dramatic two-story entry lobby as its organizing feature. The massing and detailing of buff-colored brick and limestone strongly relates to Wooster’s architectural style. The entire building offers tall floor heights with abundant natural light in nearly all spaces. Open passageways accommodate flexibility in class sizes and teaching methods. Exposed ceilings highlight the steel framing and decking as a contemporary interpretation of the existing heavy timber and wood decking.
