Brown University - Providence, RI
Charles Giancarlo Engineering Laboratories

This 18,000 SF infill pavilion to Brown University’s Department of Engineering forms a new "front door" that raises departmental visibility and simplifies circulation and accessibility. It creates a formal link to the campus as an extension of the primary pedestrian thoroughfare, Manning Walk. Entered through a curved limestone archway, the pavilion’s long ramp mitigates the varying floor elevations of adjacent buildings and resolves a 10-foot grade difference. The pavilion adds a computing room, seminar lecture hall, and electronics lab, which can be viewed from the circulation spine as "engineering in action." Natural light is delivered through clerestory windows, vertical slotted openings at the wall’s lower level, and internal skylights. A new plaza with seating and plantings furthers the building’s interaction with the greater campus community.
