Superconducting Magnet Facility

This new Superconducting Magnet Facility supports the chemistry department with a new 800 MHz nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometer. The prominent site is located at the edge of the campus, along a main thoroughfare, in proximity to the Science Complex. The form is derived as an extrusion of the cubic volume required to contain the gauss fields of magnet. The sloped roof and calibrated overhang at the entrance enhance the dramatic sculptural form while sheltering the magnet from direct sunlight and eliminating daytime artificial lighting requirements. In order to maintain the homogeneity of the magnetic field, the technical requirements included the design of a vibration isolation slab and the use of only non-ferrous construction materials.
